Andy Murray's quarter-final appearance at Wimbledon has pushed him into back
into the world's top ten.
The British No 1 has moved up from 11th to ninth in the rankings, which were
released this morning, after his best performance at a grand slam event. Murray
missed almost three months of last season with a wrist injury, including
Wimbledon, which means he has no ranking points to defend until September.
Anne Keothavong's first-round victory at Wimbledon has seen her climb to 82 in
the rankings, a career-high for the British No 1. Elena Baltacha, who also
reached the second round at The All England Club, has jumped 11 places to
133rd in the world, becoming the new British No 2.
Chris Eaton, the lowest ranked male in the tournament at 661, is now the British men's No 7 after soaring to 405th in the world. Eaton hit the headlines with his first-round victory over Boris Pashanski at the All England Club.
Rafael Nadal's epic men's final victory over Roger Federer has seen him close the gap on the world number one to 545 points. He could end this Swiss' stay at the top of the rankings - a position he has held for a record number of weeks since February 2004 - before the end of the season.
Nadal only reached the fourth round of last year's US Open and a significant improvement this time round will earn him a significant rankings boost. Federer, meanwhile, must win the event to defend the points he earned at Flushing Meadows last year.
